Alorkpem Island Community Sees Major Health and Education Boost in 2023

In 2023, Ephraim & Friends Foundation carried out a high-impact humanitarian outreach to Alorkpem Island, delivering essential support in healthcare, education, menstrual hygiene, and social welfare to vulnerable families living on the island.

The outreach brought together 95 committed partners and donors, enabling the Foundation to scale its intervention and reach households across the community with life-changing resources.

8,000+ Clothing Items Distributed to Island Families

One of the most significant outcomes of the outreach was the distribution of over 8,000 clothing items, ensuring that every family on Alorkpem Island received suitable clothing. Among these were 148 newly sewn outfits for children, addressing both comfort and dignity.

The Foundation also donated 350+ pairs of footwear, along with school bags and handbags, easing daily movement and supporting school-going children.

Breaking Barriers Through Menstrual Health Education

In a landmark step, the outreach introduced menstrual hygiene education as a core intervention. All adolescent girls on the island received sanitary pads, alongside a practical workshop focused on menstrual health, hygiene, and self-confidence.

The initiative addressed long-standing challenges related to stigma, absenteeism, and access to menstrual care in underserved island communities.

Strengthening Education Through Learning Materials

To support academic development, stationery and learning supplies were distributed to students. These materials were aimed at improving school preparedness and encouraging consistent participation in education.

Free Medical Screening and Health Post Support

Healthcare services formed a central part of the outreach. Residents benefited from free medical screenings, allowing early identification of common health concerns.

Additionally, the local health post received essential medical supplies, improving its ability to serve the community beyond the duration of the outreach.

Community Durbar Celebrates Unity and Hope

The project concluded with a community durbar, bringing together children, families, volunteers, and local leaders in a moment of celebration. The event reinforced social cohesion and highlighted the power of collective action.
